LAUREL FOR TIISETSO THIBA

Tiisetso Thiba is among the artists in the North West Province (South Africa) recognized by the department

On Wednesday 23 June artists were eagerly awaiting for the official Provincial Arts & Culture Recognition Awards - North West Province #PACRA2021 to premiere and hopefully witness their names to be called as being victorious in their respective nominated categories.

Mr. Thiba recalls with exhilaration: ‘’As I was nominated in the category of 'Best Literature Award', it was a big frightening moment because I was nominated with the legends of the Literature industry in the Province in that particular category, the ones with a seasonal experience that could not be compared to anything in this world. To be precise, Mr Kabelo Duncan Kgatea in this is my mentor who guides me more often to write and preserve the Setswana language and to my surprise I was nominated with him in the same category. I dedicate my respect to him.

‘And the public were given the chance to vote for their preferred artist for the 12 days period.

‘During that proceedings of the awards I couldn't believe my eyes seeing my name 'Tiisetso Thiba' appearing in the screen as the winner of 'Best Literature Award'!! I was thrilled and jumped a bit like a kid, and even today celebrations continues. I personally take this award as the appreciation of my work by the public at large and I would like thank all my family and friends to vote for me. In Setswana we say 'Motho ke motho ka batho' a person is a person because of their people, and I thank them abundantly.

‘I also dedicate my gratitude to my wife, Kesa, for the love and support; and I will continue to write more and pass the experience to the young and upcoming writers.’

Meanwhile, artists from North West Province are praising the Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation for its sterling work to recognize and award them for their hard work. This particular Awards will be an annual event to continue to recognize artists, and give the artists a positive hope that their work are noticed and appreciated.

Mr Thiba laughed; then added with hilarity: “The celebration continues in Sburg 'Ganyesa my home village. Hahaha hahaha. God is good all the time!!!!”

SELEKE BOTSIME WOWS THE HORDES

Seasoned SA musician, Sekeke Botsime - with his dexterous guitar in tow - wowed many denizens of Thaba Nchu and the Free State, with his new lyrical offering titled MOPHAPATHEGI (Homeless) "SLK", who brought the house down during his shows says, "The current sad situation in Ukraine - under siege by Russia - made it clear to me that life can be so unpredictable. "War has caused so much distress to those affected, the hapless refugees... who knows, it might be one's turn to pack one's bags in search of a better place - to eke out some sort of existence far away from home ... horrendous!" Seleke adds wistfully, his fingers unconsciously strumming his guitar: "The political instability of our own continent (Africa) shows that accountability is something most of our leaders lack... we fail to be the change that we want. "Hence my music calls for a better Africa "

CHAKA By Thomas Mofolo

Review by IM Soqaga Harking back to historical novels of the nations which have been churned out incessantly over the years will continue to be fascinating. Many nations such as in Europe, United State, China and elsewhere in the world have been fully versed on the genre from medieval times up to the 20th century till today. Consequentially, African writers like Thomas Mofolo, Chinua Achebe, Sol Plaatje, Ayi Kwei Armha, Naguib Mahfouz, Wole Soyinka, Maaza Mengistu, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi etc have made many impressive strides in advancing this intriguing genre. Since around 1907 to 1910, a proficient African literary pioneer from Lesotho finished penning a monumental book in Sesotho, one of Southern African indigenous languages. The book is about the most famous Chaka, the King of the Zulu’s. It is a known fact as why the book was delayed and was ultimately being published in 1925. After its publication the book Chaka by Thomas Mofolo was immed...
